Pathways This course provides students with valuable knowledge, skills and understanding that support an entry level to working in the hospitality industry, possibly through part/full-time work, apprenticeships or traineeship. Students may also decide the undertake further study when they leave school with a Certificate lll in Commerical Cookery, or this course can lead up to a bachelor's degree in hospitality management. Core units from this course can be given credit towards a Certificate lll in Hospitality, providing students with a range of skills suited to cafe work.

Training Cost

$237.50- Course fees may change in 2027.
This course is delivered by an approved registered training provider and as such, students may be eligible to be funded for the training cost of this course under a subsidised training contract (VFSS). Please refer to your school’s VET Coordinator for more information. This does not include consumables.
Non-member schools – an admin levy of $150 per student.

$190 consumables (Cost includes $120 for Chef’s Uniform and $70 excursion fee)

Entry Requirements

A genuine interest in Back if House Cookery and successful completion of the VETRO process which can be achieved through completion of the Introduction to Cookery and Barista Taster course.

Additional Information

Trainees will need to wear closed in black leather safety boots/shoes/clogs and a full chef uniform (supplied to students). A display folder, A4 pad and pen are also required.

Work Placement

70 hours of structure workplace learning (SWL) through function catering and industry placement.

Selection Process

Students will undertake the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process in Semester 2, 2026 via a referral process completed at their Home School using an online from. Once the Home School has completed the referral process, students will be required to undertake a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment to demonstrate sufficient literacy and numeracy ability.

Orientation Details

Orientation is undertaken on the first day. Students to meet at Piltarilla Restaurant (entry via Gate 2) at Heathfield High School.
